Carragher dismisses Schmeichel’s Klopp Liverpool exit ‘scenario’

Jamie Carragher has dismissed Peter Schmeichel’s claims that Jurgen Klopp would consider leaving Liverpool for Bayern Munich.

Rumours of a potential departure from Anfield for Klopp were sparked by the news that Joachim Low will step down as Germany boss this summer.

Klopp, along with RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann and Bayern’s Hansi Flick, have been named as potential successors to Low, who has been at the helm since 2006.

Carragher insisted there is “no chance” Klopp would consider leaving club football to manage at international level, but Schmeichel said he would consider leaving Anfield if the Bayern Munich job became available, a role he has been offered before.

“Think about this scenario. Let’s play with the idea that Hans-Dieter Flick takes the German job, which is not a given,” Schmeichel said on CBS Sports.

“Then Bayern needs a new coach and Jurgen Klopp has been offered that job before. That is an absolute top job.

“And it’s a top job in his own country. You say that he would never leave Liverpool for the German job. But would he leave it for Bayern Munich?”

Klopp was quick to dismiss those suggestions in a recent press conferance and Carragher doesn’t think he would leave the Reds before the end of his contract.

He said: “He may leave it when his contract finishes but I don’t think he would break his contract.

“In his two previous jobs, he has always left when his contract has finished. He has come out and stated that publicly in the last week or so.

“I would imagine he would stand by his word. And he would want to improve on the season Liverpool have had this season.”

And speaking earlier this week, Klopp’s agent, Marc Kosicke, insisted that his client’s time as Liverpoolmanager is far from over.

“He’s not finished with his work in Liverpool,” he told German publication Sport1. “There is no back door open because Jurgen still has a three-year contract with the Reds.

“He made this very clear so that there would be no room for speculation.”
