Carragher has sympathy for Maguire after ‘nervous’ mistake

Jamie Carragher suggested that Harry Maguire “took too much responsibility” when defending Everton’s stoppage-time equaliser on Saturday.

Man United were two up at the break thanks to goals from Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes. Carlo Ancelotti’s side hit back in the second half. Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez netted in the space of three minutes to make it 2-2.

Scott McTominay headed United back in front with twenty minutes to go. It looked like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men had done enough to earn all three points as it remained 3-2 in stoppage time.

The Toffees earned a free-kick with just seconds of the game to go. Michael Keane kept the move alive before Dominic Calvert-Lewin poked into the net to earn his side an unlikely point.

When the free-kick was taken, Maguire was behind the rest of the defence and he played multiple Everton players onside.

Speaking during Monday Night Football, as cited by The Mirror, Carragher admitted that he never had “the nerve to hold the line” when he played:

“Rafa Benitez used to be on at me, about free-kicks late in the game, constantly. I didn’t have the nerve to hold the line.

“I’d be that nervous about conceding a goal, I’d think ‘I need to head this away’.

“When you’re Harry Maguire in that position, and it’s the position I’d be in. When you’re at the back of the line – or certainly in the middle – and there’s bodies everywhere, some players are offside, some are making runs.

“A lot of the time you can’t see the ball. You’re jumping and jostling. What I would do, which was a mistake all the time, as I’d want to drop two yards so I could almost see the ball.

“I almost think Harry Maguire has taken too much responsibility – and that’s what I used to at times.

“I’d think I’d want to head the ball. ‘I’m that nervous I want to head this’ and you drop off a little bit and then go to attack it.

“I think that’s the mistake he’s made. He hasn’t been brave enough but I can put myself in the situation.”
