Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards were involved in a heated debate when discussing Jude Bellingham’s disallowed goal against Manchester City.
Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring at the Etihad in the 19th minute. Borussia Dortmund were harshly denied an equaliser just before half time.
Ederson took his time in possession and Bellingham was there to nick the ball away from him. The Englishman tapped the ball into the net just after the referee blew for a foul.

Ovidiu Hategan incorrectly ruled that Bellingham had fouled Ederson. As he blew his whistle before he tapped it into the net, VAR could not be used.

Appearing on CBS Sports, Carragher and Richards clashed when discussing the incident after the game:
“We’re talking about VAR and how we’re spoiling the game because we’re taking away from the referee managing the game…’ Richards began.
Carragher then stated: “I know why you didn’t want VAR tonight, Jesus Christ! It should be 2-2.
“That’s nonsense. It’s a unique situation, it’s not normal, that doesn’t happen often.
“How can you not understand this? This is the most bizarre thing I’ve ever heard. Right, he goes through and thinks it’s a foul, not a problem… but he knows if he blows that whistle it takes VAR out of the equation… yes?
“We all know what’s going to happen. He will roll the ball in the net and then we can have a look.”
Richards then interjected to point out that there is not a rule that states that referees must let play continue to allow VAR to intervene. Carragher then suggested that UEFA would not think that the referee made the right call:
‘Do you think tonight when he goes back into the room, the people at UEFA or FIFA looking at his performance will say “he got that right”?’
Richards then agreed that the referee made the wrong call. Presenter Kate Abdo brought the exchange to a conclusion by telling the viewers that: “men love to argue, don’t they?”
Man City went onto win the first leg 2-1. Marco Reus equalised for Dortmund in the final ten minutes but Phil Foden grabbed a winner for Pep Guardiola’s side late on.
Dortmund host City in the second leg next Wednesday at Signal Iduna Park.
