Ancelotti urges Everton to aim high during top four battle

Carlo Ancelotti has urged his Everton side to aim high during their fight for a European spot.

The Toffees are seventh in the Premier League after 25 matches, having picked up 43 points.

They’re level on points with rivals Liverpool and are just two behind fourth-placed West Ham.

Speaking ahead of their clash with West Brom on Thursday, Ancelotti said: “We are pleased to be in the fight. We have to use our expectations as a motivation. If expectations are high, it is absolutely normal at a club with fantastic history. We want to be back there as they were in the past.

“Expectation is not a bad word in my opinion. It is a good word. It keeps you motivated. I think it’s important to have ambition.”

The Italian boss is aiming to secure European football for Everton for the first time since 2017/18.

His side have the chance to gain a top four place with a win over West Brom, although it might be brief.

Ancelotti continued: “I forgot there was that game and maybe Liverpool or Chelsea can be in the top four, but it doesn’t matter. We want three points, it is important to stay in the fight.

“I’m sure this situation with the European positions will be decided in the last game and we want to be there until the last game.”

When asked about the quality of Sam Allardyce’s side, Ancelotti said: “I think West Brom are playing now how Allardyce wants them to.

“They are strong defensively, strong in contact and show good organisation. It is not a coincidence they did not concede in their last two games, even if they were a little lucky that Brighton missed two penalties.

“The defensive consistency is there and to find opportunities will not be easy for us.”
