The marriage between Carabao and the English Football League (EFL) looks set to continue for another couple of years, after the Thai energy drink manufacturer recently opted to renew its contract.
Carabao and the EFL first linked up in 2017, in what was set to be a three year agreement. However, as the arrangement clearly was optimal for both sides, Carabao decided to extend the contract for both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 campaigns.
And now, the company has decided to continue the partnership. As per Sports Business, this extension will now take Carabao’s sponsorship arrangement until the conclusion of the 2023/24 edition of the EFL Cup.
Currently, Carabao’s deal nets them $8.3 million (£6 million/€7 million) per annum; it’s not clear if the additional renewal will mean a change in these yearly earnings.
Interestingly, this additional extension comes on the heels of UEFA looking to add more Champions League matches starting from the 2024/25 season. Due to the number of cup competitions, English teams already play more matches than others in Europe’s “Big Five” leagues, and with some wishing to do away with the EFL Cup entirely, it will be very interesting to see if Carabao and the EFL continue this partnership beyond 2024.
