Pundit ‘can guarantee’ Ings would score more for City than Jesus

Darren Bent claims that Southampton striker Danny Ings would score more goals for Manchester City than current striker Gabriel Jesus.

Ings has bagged eight goals in 22 Premier League appearances this term for the Saints, while Jesus has seven in 21 matches for the Citizens.

With Erling Haaland likely to be expensive in the next summer transfer window, recent reports have indicated that City see Ings as ‘a more attainable option’.

Ings is heading towards the final year of his contract at Southampton with no sign of a new deal and Bent reckons signing Ings would be a no-brainer for the Citizens.

Bent told talkSPORT: “If you’re talking about someone replacing Aguero, it’s virtually impossible, you’re not going to find someone who can come in and do what he has done at that club.

“But I really like the idea of Danny Ings going there, I think he’s a very very good centre forward and he’s been brilliant over the last couple of seasons. He has been plagued by injuries, but I think he’d do a job there.

“You put him around better players who create so many opportunities, he is an unbelievable  finisher, really really good finisher, so if you put him in situations where he can score goal I can guarantee you he’d score more goals in that team than Gabriel Jesus.

“The only thing that would put people off this signing is snobbery. Fans probably think they should be going for players like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, but signing a player of Ings’ quality is a no-brainer.

“He’s a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and if I was at Man City, I’d get him in now, get someone like him in the door for decent money, and then go after your Haalands or your Mbappes.”

Previously Emile Heskey has tipped Ings for a move away from Southampton with the former Liverpool striker urging Tottenham to make a move.

Heskey said: “He would definitely be looking (at a move). He’s been so unlucky with injuries but he’s shown, on many occasions, that he’s got ability and he can score goals – and different types of goals.

“His goal the other day was phenomenal. The technique! He’s got an immense understanding of the game, when he plays up front with Che Adams, I love it.

“When I was playing up front with Michael (Owen) or Robbie (Fowler), we were always looking for each other – its all about the link-up.

“The defensive side of it, he wants to do that as well. He’s a manager’s dream. And now he’s probably saying; ‘I want to win some stuff now, I want to be a major part of a team winning stuff’.

“(An Ings and Kane partnership) could be exciting. They’ve got Son, who I think is fantastic, but he can play in different positions, he can play on the wings. Kane and Ings are both intelligent footballers, they must have played together with England as well so there must be an understanding.

“That would be a great move for him.”
