Bent expected Bale-Mourinho to ‘butt heads’ at Spurs

Darren Bent has sided with Jose Mourinho with his treatment of Gareth Bale at Tottenham, suggesting he needs to do more to get more chances.

Bale rejoined Spurs on a season-long loan from Real Madrid in September 2020. He had spent the last seven years in Madrid and in that time he scored 105 goals from his 251 outings.

The Welshman missed the start of the season with knee problems. But he has struggled to hit the ground running for the club after making his second debut.

Bale has four goals from his 15 appearances for Tottenham this season. Yet, he has only started twice in the Premier League. Most of his outings have come in the Europa League and in cup competitions.

Bent told talkSPORT that it was only going to be a matter of time before Bale and Mourinho had disagreements:

“I wondered how long it would be before those two butted heads.

“At the start of the season, I looked at the situation and you know what Mourinho’s like, if you’re not up to a certain standard he [Mourinho] doesn’t really care what reputation you’ve got, if you’re not up to scratch, you’re not going to play.

“Now, we’re starting to see them butt heads. Bale came off a couple of games ago, they didn’t even look at each other.

“What’s he bringing? In this situation, I can’t really blame Mourinho.

“It’s not like when Bale’s played he’s given the manager a problem by going, ‘I can’t really leave him out.’

“Bale’s played a lot of games in Europe, he’s played a lot in cup competitions, he’s featured in the Premier League, but he hasn’t really shown anything.

“There have been times when I’ve looked at him and gone, ‘right, maybe this is Bale’s time’… still, next to nothing.

“Honestly, I did wonder how long it would be until they started butting heads.”
