Barcelona want Liverpool boss Klopp to replace Koeman

Barcelona have been weighing up the possibility of replacing Ronald Koeman with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp this summer, according to reports.

The Catalan giants beat Athletic Bilbao to lift the Copa del Rey trophy in April but it is their performance in La Liga and the Champions League that has heaped pressure on Koeman.

Defeat to Celta Vigo on Sunday means that Barca can no longer win the La Liga title this season with Atletico Madrid heading for glory, while Koeman’s outfit crashed out of the Champions League in the last-16 to Paris Saint-Germain.

Previous reports in Spain have claimed that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta – who has hardly covered himself in glory this season – is in contention to replace the Dutchman.

New Barcelona president Joan Laporta has decided the club needs a new direction and is ready to sack Koeman at the end of the season.

Koeman is yet to complete a full year as Barcelona manager after he left the Dutch national team to become their new boss last summer.

Sport claimed yesterday that Laporta is ‘thinking’ about making Barcelona legend Xavi – who has been managing Qatari side Al Sadd for the past two years – the new manager at the Camp Nou.

And today a fresh report from Sport (via Sport Witness) reckons Barcelona want to bring in Liverpool boss Klopp but that it won’t happen for a couple of reasons.

They have looked at the possibility of bringing Klopp to Catalonia with the German having many admirers on the Blaugrana board.

Klopp is understood to be among several candidates being considered but Sport claim a move this summer would be ‘impossible’.

Not because the Liverpool boss – who has never hinted that he wants out – wouldn’t leave Anfield, but apparently because of ‘an economic issue’.

Klopp was recently linked with the job as Germany manager after Joachim Low announced his departure from the position.

But Germany announced Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick – who will be replaced by Julian Nagelsmann – as their new manager after Euro 2020 with Klopp’s contract running until 2024 at Anfield.
