Aston Villa legend gives verdict on Barkley

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has suggested that Ross Barkley has struggled since returning to full fitness.

The midfielder joined Aston Villa on loan this summer from Chelsea. He impressed in fits and starts for the Blues but a lack of game time led to his move to Villa Park.

Barkley made a fantastic start as he scored in his Premier League debut as Dean Smith’s side hammered Liverpool 7-2 in October.

SPOILER ALERT: N’Golo Kante is back to his Chelsea best

The Englishman followed that up with another goal in their next game as they beat Leicester City 1-0 at The King Power Stadium.

But Barkley suffered a hamstring injury in November and this has been a huge setback. He made his return in January but he has not been able to perform at the level he did before his injury.

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor claimed that at the moment, he would not push for Villa to spend £35m on Barkley this summer:

“I don’t think so at the moment. Barkley did amazingly before his injury. Since his injury, he looks like he might not be 100 per cent fit yet.

“If he can play in these last games and put in performances in these last 13 games then, yes, Villa will want to buy him.

“It all depends on him. Villa won’t want to pay £35million unless he shows in these games that he’s worth the money.

“He’s got to put in the performances to justify the money. Villa won’t pay it unless he puts in the performances.”
