Arsenal set to offer defender Luiz one-year contract extension

Arsenal will reportedly offer David Luiz a one-year contract extension as the player continues to impress manager Mikel Arteta.

The 33-year-old’s current deal expires in June as part of the Gunners’ policy to offer limited contracts to ageing players.

He could now be set to finish his career at the Emirates as Arteta sees him as an important part of the squad.

According to The Independent, Arsenal will offer Luiz a contract extension in the coming months.

Luiz is seen as a positive influence on Arteta’s young squad. Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are two youngsters that are under pressure to perform, with the Brazilian defender helping to lessen that burden.

He is thought to be a good player to have in the dressing room, too.

Luiz has won many trophies since moving to England. The list includes a league title with Chelsea in 2016/17 and three FA Cups.

Arteta is keen for Arsenal to retain the centre back’s services until at least 2022.

The player has come in for criticism in recent weeks after being sent off during the 2-1 loss to Wolves.

Luiz seemed to trip Willian Jose as he raced into the box, with Ruben Neves scoring the following penalty.

That was the defender’s fourth red card in the Premier League.

However, he proved his importance to Arsenal once again in their 4-2 victory over Leeds yesterday.

Luiz was effective in bringing the ball out of defence to put Arsenal on the front foot.

He is arguably the only centre back that can do that at the club. He’s also forming a good relationship with Gabriel Magalhaes in the heart of defence.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returned to form in the recent win. The talisman scored a hat trick as Arsenal reached 34 points in the league, putting them tenth in the table.
