Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has insisted that his teammates are “wishing” that Martin Odegaard will remain at the club beyond this season.
Odegaard came through the ranks with Norweigan outfit Strømsgodset. He was soon recognised as one of Europe’s most promising youngsters as he was part of their first-team when he was just 15-years-old.
The midfielder got five goals and six assists for his boyhood club from his 25 outings in the Tippeligaen in 2014.

He trained with the likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich, but he signed for Real Madrid in January 2015.
Odegaard made his senior debut for Real Madrid on the final day of the 2014/15 La Liga season. In doing so, the 16-year-old became the club’s youngest ever debutant.
After being unable to establish himself as a first-team regular, the midfielder joined Heerenveen on loan in 2016. He spent two years there before he had successful spells with Vitesse and Real Sociedad.
Odegaard grabbed seven goals and nine assists for Sociedad during the 2019/20 season. He returned to Madrid at the start of this campaign and he played nine times up until January.
The youngster was allowed to join Arsenal during the winter transfer window on loan. He has two goals from eleven appearances for the Gunners so far.
His first Premier League goal came in the North London derby last weekend. Elneny has told AGTV that Odegaard has the “personality” to be a captain:
“You always see him coaching players, outside of the dressing room as well.
“He talks all the time about the game and what we are going to do. He has the personality to be a captain.”
Elneny was also asked whether Odegaard is likely to remain at Arsenal beyond the end of this season, he replied: “We wish, we wish, we wish.”
Last month, Odegaard appeared open to staying at the Gunners. But he insisted that he is just “focused” on impressing before the end of the season:
“You never know what is going to happen. But for now, I am just focusing on doing my best this season and helping the team as much as possible.”
