Arsenal have edged ahead of their rivals as they look to bring Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling to the Emirates Stadium, according to reports.
Sterling has contributed 14 goals and nine assists in all competitions this season for City but his performances have come under scrutiny.
The England international was in brilliant form in the previous two campaigns and Sterling recently described his mixed displays this time around as a “very weird one”.
TAA omission should be met with understanding, not anger
The former Liverpool man has had to spend some time on the bench this season with Pep Guardiola rotating Ferran Torres and Riyad Mahrez.
That has led to suggestions he could move on this summer after City’s devastating loss in the Champions League final against Chelsea.
The Sun has linked Sterling and team-mate Gabriel Jesus with a possible move to Tottenham in a swap deal for Harry Kane.
Sterling is currently being paid £300k a week with the report claiming that ‘the wages are not the only obstacle for Spurs’.
They reckon that the Gunners could ruin their chances of buying Sterling with ‘Arsenal leading the chase for the Three Lions winger’.
Meanwhile, former City winger Trevor Sinclair reckons Sterling will have “a queue of clubs wanting to sign him”.
Sinclair said: “I might be wrong, but reading between the lines and the media that’s being released, I think they’d be prepared to let him go.
“I think there’s a potential move for Raheem this summer. There are a few rumours coming out that Man City are prepared to listen to offers.
“You look at the way he’s played during his time at Man City and he has been superb.
“I think there will be a queue of clubs wanting to sign him, not on the last three or four months of form but on his previous nine years of performances.
“He’s not had any real injury problems. I look at him and he doesn’t look excited; he looks anxious about being out there.
“He’s proved to all the fans he’s a top player, so I think he needs a fresh challenge and I think it would coincide with the club’s model.”
