Chelsea have the artillery to win the eight team Aguero war, but Arsenal have got their muskets at the ready…
AGUERO WAR
To term the chase for Sergio Aguero a battle would not be doing it justice – this is all out war.
Manchester City announced the club legend would be leaving the Etihad earlier this week and the rumoured number of interested clubs has increased steadily to a current recorded peak of eight.
Barcelona were seemingly the first to put their heads above the parapet and were in ‘pole position’ to land the Argentinian – encouraged to do so by claims that a certain Lionel Messi would sign a new deal if they bring his best bud to the Nou Camp. Making it a no-brainer even if Aguero never made it on to the pitch.

But then, signing the hottest property in European football may also be enough to encourage the greatest footballer that’s ever lived to remain in Catalonia – but we’re not focussing on the various warring factions fighting for Erling Haaland. Although many of the parties are inevitably the same…
The Mail claims Chelsea have got the jump on their opponents and the artillery to do the damage. The 32-year-old is reportedly desperate to remain in England and the report suggests Manchester United are interested but Sergio would ‘never want to ruin his relationship with City fans by moving across town’ and other prospective buyers Liverpool are eyeing improvements in other areas; making strange decisions in the process.
Chelsea it is then, who attempted to sign Aguero from Atletico Madrid in 2011. They’ve got the resources to cover his considerable £13million salary and could definitely do with a goalscorer. The question is whether Aguero wants to join a club where strikers go to die…
Or perhaps he fancies a dalliance with a mid-table Premier League club? Arsenal have got their muskets at the ready according to Argentine-based journalist Lucas Scagliola. This might not be as crazy a rumour as it first seems with Alexandre Lacazette attracting interest from elsewhere and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang very much favouring the left wing. It does presumably rely on the Gunners winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League, but they have looked good under Mikel Arteta in that competition.
The two reports include various other European heavyweights for good measure, with Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid all thrown into the mix, along with Benfica and boyhood club Independiente.
Prepare yourself for two months of spurious links and nonsensical rumours. This will be a war of attrition, for those of us having to write about it, at least.
DEP-AYE
Despite Liverpool targeting other problem areas, they are reportedly keen to add a bit of firepower up front.
Memphis Depay, who seems to have been close to a move to Barcelona for the last two seasons, is on Jurgen Klopp’s radar according to Marca.
The Dutchman has bagged 15 goals for Lyon this season, with both Liverpool and Juventus said to be keen on sweeping a Ronald Koeman favourite from under the nose of the Barcelona boss.
Depay still wants to join Barca, but a choice between him and Haaland isn’t really a choice at all. It may be taken out of his hands.
