AC Milan legend lauds Chelsea loanee Tomori

AC Milan legend Franco Baresi has suggested that Chelsea youngster Fikayo Tomori is “one of the most promising prospects” out there today.

Tomori came through the ranks with the Blues and he made his senior debut for them in 2016. After successful loan spells with Hull, Brighton and Derby, he broke into Chelsea’s first team last season.

Frank Lampard, who managed the defender at Derby, made him one of his first-choice centre-backs during the 2019/20 campaign.

The Englishman played 22 times for his boyhood club last season. But he fell down the pecking order towards the end of the campaign.

Tomori was linked with a move to West Ham in the summer and he only played four times for Chelsea up until January.

AC Milan swooped to bring the defender in on loan during the winter window. They also have an option to buy him for around £25m. He has played eight times for them since his move.

Baresi told Sportsmail that Tomori can “only grow as a defender” in the coming years:

“He is young and has played well so far when he’s had the chance.

“He is skilful and has great physical attributes. He is still adapting to the Italian league and I think he can only grow as a defender and help us out.

“He needs to be focused on the present and on doing well with AC Milan. The club will decide his future with the player and with Chelsea at the end of the season.

“There is great competition in England, but he is definitely one of the most promising prospects out there. His experience with AC Milan can certainly help him develop as a player.”
