Chelsea leading the race to sign 26-yr-old, but face competition from Man Utd – originally posted on Sportslens.com
Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has been linked with a move away from La Liga this summer and it appears that Manchester United and Chelsea are keen on securing his services.
According to a report from AS, the Blues are well placed to beat the Red Devils to the 26-year-old’s signature.
The report adds that Saul is very close to leaving the Spanish champions this summer and he is headed to the Premier League.
Apparently, the two Premier League clubs are hoping to sign the midfielder on a loan deal and they will pay a loan fee to the Spanish club. They will also take over the midfielder’s wages completely.
The 26-year-old midfielder needs to leave in order to play regular first-team football this season and a move to Manchester United or Chelsea could be ideal.
Both clubs need to add quality and depth to their midfield and Saul could prove to be a smart addition.
The Spaniard can operate in multiple roles across the midfield and he can slot in as a defender as well.
The midfielder was handed just 22 starts in the Spanish league last season and a player of his calibre needs to play week in week out.
In theory, he could form a quality midfield partnership alongside Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford.
The hard-working midfielder will add defensive cover for the centre backs and he could influence the offensive phase of the game with his passing and his bulldozing runs from the midfield.
Similarly, he would add depth and quality to Chelsea’s midfield alongside N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic.
