It is an open secret that Tottenham Hotspur want to sign a central defender this summer.
Along with bolstering other areas, signing a central defender is a priority for Fabio Paratici.
Toby Alderweireld has informed the club that he wants to move out, while the futures of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez are in doubt.
Spurs have been linked with a host of defenders including Milan Skriniar, Joachim Anderson, Nikola Milenkovic, Jules Kounde, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jannik Vestergaard this summer, and the list is likely to expand as the window drags on.
The north London club have offered £12.9 million plus add-ons for Tomiyasu, but Bologna are holding firm on their valuation of around £14.6m.
According to reports from Football London, Spurs “remain in dialogue” with Atalanta about trying to sign Cristian Romero.
The Argentine defender, who won the Copa America this summer, was voted the Serie A’s top defender last season, and he is the north London club’s first-choice target this summer.
An excerpt from the report:
“Atalanta are set to activate their option to buy the player for €16million (£13.8m) following the first year of a two-year loan from Juventus – a deal engineered by Paratici during his time there.
“Spurs then want to hand the Italian side a profit and bring the talented 23-year-old to the Premier League.”
Football London now claim that Romero is keen on the move to Spurs, as long as Barcelona or Real Madrid do not come into the picture.
However, given Barcelona’s financial plight, it is highly unlikely that the Catalan giants would move for him this summer.
Atalanta are believed to want more than €40 million (£34.5 million) for the defender.
It would be a “big deal with a hefty fee” to sign Romero. It is also a complicated deal but Paratici feels Romero is a player who can make a big difference to the side.
Paratici has earned his reputation for being a good negotiator, and it will be interesting to see if he can bring one of Europe’s top young defenders to north London this summer.
