Argentine defender Cristian Romero is Tottenham Hotspur’s first-choice target to improve their back four this summer.
According to The Athletic, the 23-year-old defender will cost around €40 million but the London club are reluctant to pay that kind of money for the services.
Romero was on loan at Atalanta last season and he produced impressive defensive performances for the Italian outfit. The Argentine was chosen as the league’s best defender as well and it is no surprise that the Premier League side are looking to sign him to improve their defence.
Atalanta have an option to sign the player permanently from Juventus and they are open to making the move permanent and then selling him off to Tottenham for a profit this summer.
Romero is only 23 and he has the potential to develop into one of the best defenders around Europe. The €40 million asking price might seem steep right now but the player certainly has the ability to justify the outlay in the long run.
The report from Athletic adds that there are other alternatives if a move for Romero does not materialize.
Apparently, the likes of Joachim Andersen and Jannik Vestergaard are on Tottenham’s wishlist as well.
The defence has been a problem position for Tottenham over the past year and they will have to bring in quality reinforcements if they want to challenge for a top-four place next year. Spurs conceded 45 goals in the Premier League last year.
Romero could sort out their defensive situation and the Argentine could be an upgrade on the likes of Davinson Sanchez. The Colombian has struggled to adapt to English football since his move from Ajax.
If he manages to adapt to English football quickly, the 23-year-old could transform Tottenham at the back and form a quality long-term partnership with Joe Rodon.
