Sergio Ramos rejected the advances of Premier League duo Manchester City and Arsenal before signing for Paris Saint-Germain, reports Goal.

Ramos has been one of the very best defenders of the current generation over his 16-year spell with Real Madrid.

At the Spanish giants, he scored over 100 goals from centre-back and won 11 major trophies, including four Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles.

In addition, he has also won three major honours on the international stage with Spain.

This summer, the 35-year-old’s time at the Bernabeu came to an end following the expiry of his contract.

There was no lack of interest in his signature, with several top clubs looking to snag a world-class defender on a free transfer. And, after loads of speculation, he moved to Ligue 1 to join PSG on a two-year deal.

It has now been revealed by Goal that he had offers from the Premier League, turning down champions Manchester City and Arsenal.

Arsenal have suffered a serious slump in recent times, failing to qualify for the Champions League for the fifth consecutive season.

This year, they will not be playing any continental football, having finished in eighth place.

The Gunners will have been looking at the centre-back to get back among the big boys. However, it is believed that their failure to qualify for the Champions League was the reason for his refusal.

Man City are in a much healthier position than Arsenal. They have just won their third league title in four seasons and also reached the Champions League final.

A major European trophy still evades them, but they will have hoped that a man of Ramos’ ability and experience would help them get over that final hurdle.

Furthermore, they could need a new centre-back this summer, with Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake being linked with moves away from the Etihad Stadium.

Youngster Eric Garcia has already left, leaving them with only Ruben Dias and John Stones to choose from.

Goal reports that they offered him a two-year contract and that he would play for partner club New York City for three years from 2023.

The Spaniard considered the offer but decided that PSG’s proposition was more suited to him.

In Paris, Ramos will be part of a side looking to reclaim the crown in Ligue 1, having fallen behind Lille last season.
