Everton will need to improve their defensive unit this summer and newly appointed manager Rafa Benitez is already working towards that.

According to Fichajes, the Spaniard has urged the Merseyside club to make a move for the Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet.

The Frenchman has had a mixed time at Camp Nou and his performances have not been too convincing since joining the club. The Spanish outfit are under financial stress right now and it wouldn’t be surprising if they were open to selling the centre back this summer.

Apparently, Benitez is confident that he can help the Frenchman regain his best form and the Toffees could take advantage of Barcelona’s financial situation and try to sign the player on a bargain.

The report further states that Benitez does not trust Yerry Mina and he considers the likes of Ben Godfrey and Mason Holgate as future prospects.

It is evident that he wants someone who can transform Everton’s defence immediately.

Lenglet was highly rated in Spain before his move to Barcelona and if he can regain that form and confidence, he could prove to be a solid addition for the Merseyside outfit.

Signing him on the current form could prove to be a gamble but Benitez seems confident that he can make the move work.

The Spanish manager is a master at organising defences and he has proven his pedigree across multiple leagues. He could be the man to unlock Lenglet’s potential next season. Meanwhile, the player needs a fresh start as well and a move to Everton could be ideal for him.

It remains to be seen whether the Everton hierarchy are now prepared to back their manager and sign the 26-year-old before the new season begins.
