Newcastle United have been linked with a move for the Gabon international Mario Lemina.

The 27-year-old was on loan at Fulham this past season and Newcastle’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson personally scouted the player during the final few weeks of last season.

According to the Chronicle, the midfielder is surplus to requirements at Southampton and he is on Newcastle’s summer shortlist.

Lemina is well settled in the Premier League and he could prove to be a quality addition to Steve Bruce’s side.

Apparently, the Newcastle manager is keen on improving his midfield options this summer.

Matty Longstaff has been linked with a move away from the club this summer and Lemina could be his alternative next season.

The Southampton midfielder will be keen on sorting out his long-term future and a move to Newcastle would be ideal for him.

He’s likely to get enough playing time at St James’s Park and the 27-year-old would also be an upgrade on the likes of Jeff Hendrick.

The midfielder has one year left on his contract with the Saints and he is likely to be available for a reasonable price this summer.

Midfield is an area that Newcastle must look to improve this summer and they have been linked with a permanent move for Joe Willock in recent weeks as well. The Arsenal midfielder had an outstanding loan spell with the Magpies last year.
