Southampton join the race to sign in-demand £27m Newcastle target – report – originally posted on Sportslens.com
Southampton have joined the race to sign William Saliba from Arsenal this summer.
According to reports from Foot Mercato, several clubs are interested in signing Saliba in the summer transfer window.
Arsenal defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the race to secure the signature of Saliba from Saint-Etienne for £27m back in July 2019.
He signed a five-year contract and spent one more season with the Ligue 1 club before joining Arsenal in the summer of 2020.
The 20-year-old spent the last season on loan in France with Nice, where he heavily impressed.
The loan move was a success for the youngster and it is expected that he will finally make his debut for the north London club.
The report claim that Arsenal are looking to send him away on loan once again this summer.
Several French clubs like Nice, Stade Rennais, Marseille and Lille have shown interest in signing the talented youngster who made 22 appearances last season.
Southampton and Newcastle are also keen to sign him, while German club Bayer Leverkusen are also interested. Several Italian clubs have also registered their interest but there’s no concrete offer on the table.
The Saints were very disappointing last season, finishing 15th in the league.
They conceded 68 goals last season, and needless to say, signing a new defender is a top priority. Saliba, on loan, will be a great signing for the club.
Newcastle are also looking to bolster their defence, and have earmarked Saliba as a potential option. However, the Magpies have other targets, with Celtic’s Kristoff Ajer being top of their priority list.
