Chris Smalling

Everton have been linked with a move for the former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

According to Sky Italia, the player has a contract with Roma until the summer of 2023 but he could be sold this summer because Jose Mourinho is looking to bring in a pacy central defender.

Apparently, Everton have already enquired about the 31-cap England international’s situation at the Italian club and it remains to be seen whether they can come forward with an acceptable offer in the coming weeks now.

SL View: Could be a useful short term option

It is no secret that Everton need to improve their defensive options in the summer and Smalling could prove to be a useful addition in the short term.

The 31-year-old has played in the Premier League before with Manchester United and Fulham and he could make an instant impact at Goodison Park next season.

The Toffees have Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Ben Godfrey as the first-team centre backs and bringing in another reliable defender would be ideal for them.

Smalling managed just 21 appearances for Roma last season because of injury problems and Everton will be hoping that the defender can get over his injury problems if he moves to Goodison Park next season.

The Italian club paid a fee of around €20 million for the defender and they will probably be looking to recoup most of that this summer.
