Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said that he is unsure about whether Timo Werner has what it takes to be a success with Chelsea.

The German’s first season in England was a frustrating one for both him and Chelsea. He arrived last summer with much expectation after having scored 34 goals in all competitions for former club RB Leipzig in the 2019/20 season.

“I like the quality of his runs,” Wenger said on BeIn Sports. “I like his movement, but he’s not… we see his conversion rate with the number of chances he has.

“He’s not good enough to say, ‘but he will be absolutely the favourite to be the player of the tournament [Euro 2020]’.

“Because in this kind of tournaments, you have to, you need a good conversion rate.

The 25-year-old only managed to muster six Premier League goals and 12 goals in all competitions in his first season at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea managed a fourth-place finish in the league but had Werner achieved expectations and scored between 20-30 goals as many expected him to do, there is a chance that his club could have challenged Manchester City for the league title.

Despite his frustrations this season, Chelsea are expected to give Werner another chance to impress last season. In defence of the striker, he did show glimpses of brilliance and has tremendous talent.

The Blues are also expected to offload Olivier Giroud this summer while Tammy Abraham could also embark on a new adventure.

Given that all three of their natural strikers did not really sparkle this season, Chelsea will be looking to bring in fresh faces this summer to increase competition and goal output.

Werner is likely to stay on and fight for a place in the team but he will not have any excuses should he fail to be on top of his game next season.

Should he have another bad season, it is unlikely that he will be kept at Stamford Bridge.

Werner can set the tone for a good football season ahead by helping the German national team for whom he boasts 15 goals do well in the European Championships.
