Carlo Ancelotti has returned to Real Madrid this summer and Everton will need to find a quality long term replacement now.

According to the Athletic, Everton held a board meeting earlier today to discuss their current situation and they are now drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements for the Italian.

Apparently Steven Gerrard and the former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez are two candidates who are being considered for the Goodison Park job.

Gerrard did a tremendous job at Rangers this past season and he has helped break Celtic’s domestic dominance.

The former Liverpool midfielder guided Rangers to an unbeaten season in the league and the Ibrox outfit were quite impressive in the Europa League under his management as well.

Although he’s still relatively inexperienced as a manager he could bring some much-needed aggression and freshness to the Merseyside club if he takes over from Ancelotti.

Meanwhile, Benitez would be a superb alternative as well. The Spaniard has proven himself across multiple leagues and he could help Everton climb up the Premier League table next season.

That said, it would be highly surprising if either of Gerrard or Benitez decided to take up the job because of his history with Everton’s bitter rivals, Liverpool.

Ancelotti’s departure will come as a damaging blow to Everton’s plans for next season and it will be interesting to see how the players react to his exit in the coming weeks now. The last thing Everton need right now is some of their players wanting to leave because of Ancelotti’s decision.
