Newcastle make enquiry for 21-year-old defender, two other PL clubs keen – originally posted on Sportslens.com

Newcastle United have reportedly made an enquiry for the Benfica defender Nuno Tavares.

According to O Jogo, the 21-year-old defender could be available for a fee of around €15 million and the likes of Brighton and Southampton are keen on the player as well.

It is no secret that the Magpies will have to improve defensively during the summer transfer window and signing a quality full-back should be a priority for them.

Steve Bruce has had to rely on the likes of Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie as his left-backs this season and Tavares could be an upgrade on both players.

The highly-rated youngster has a release clause of £88 million but Benfica are willing to sell him to far less than that.

The defender can play as a wing-back and he could be very useful for Newcastle in the attack as well. Tavares has three assists to his name in all competitions this season.

The 21-year-old is a player with immense potential and the reported asking price could prove to be a major bargain in future.

It will be interesting to see if Newcastle can fend off the competition from the other two Premier League clubs and secure his services in the coming months.

The Magpies have been linked with a move for Jetro Willems recently as well and it seems they are keen on bringing in a full-back this summer.
